Summer Course on Sustainability, River Basin Management and Climate Change in the Baltic Sea
20 - 24 September 2011, Hamburg, Germany
The Summer Course is an initiative of the German office of the Baltic University Programme in Hamburg and is organized in cooperation with the Interreg IVB Baltic Sea Region project WATERPRAXIS. It is meant to acquaint delegates from various countries about matters related to sustainable development, river basin management and climate issues in the Baltic, as well as foster international and multicultural learning. The course will offer a state-of-the-art overview of matters related to sustainable development and river basin management and will be a timely contribution towards efforts in the internationalisation, networking and cultural interaction among local government officials, practitioners and students from Baltic countries.

Workshop: Acid Sulphate Soils and Land Use

Land use by ditching and ditch cleaning on acid sulphate soils (ASS) is an increasing environmental problem. Our knowledge on the biogeochemical effects of anthropogenic activities on ASS has gradually increased whereas ecological effects are rarely studied. In addition, we still do not know the accurate distribution and dimension of ASS.

People from local governments, officials, engineers, practitioners and students from Baltic countries may register for the Summer Course. Students from all subjects currently registered at universities across the Baltic Sea are especially welcome to attend the Summer Course. Interested participants need to register until the 30th June 2010.

Workshop on Land-Use Modelling
11 - 13 November 2009, Helsinki, Finland
The aim of the training workshop is to provide knowledge and methods to the participants regarding the challenges from climate change and land-use development on river basin planning and management. Focus will be on hands-on exercises using freely available GIS based software developed in earlier EU projects Forum Skagerrak, RiverLife and Watersketch. The participants will be provided with data. The target group of this workshop is land-use and river basin planners. Experience in GIS is expected.
