For protection of water resources in the Sulejowski Reservoir

13 September 2011, Mniszków municipality, Poland

Seminar: for protection of water resources in the Sulejowski ReservoirThe seminar summarizing the results achieved in the project WATERPRAXIS took place on Tuesday, 13th September 2011. It is a part of the European Baltic Sea Protection Programme and is based on implementing effective, innovative ways to reduce emissions of pollutants into rivers and lakes in the Baltic countries. During the seminar the technical documentation of the planned investment, which has been funded by the WATERPRAXIS project, has been handed over to the authorities of Mniszków municipality. Its implementation will contribute to the improvement of water quality in the Sulejowski Reservoir.

As the object of actions and activities of the Polish partner of the WATERPRAXIS project – the Technical University of Lodz – the Sulejowski Reservoir has been chosen because of the problems associated with eutrophication and algal blooms deteriorating water quality in the reservoir. The project aimed to reduce emissions of nutrients (e.g. they involve chemical compounds contained in wastewater) that cause eutrophication of water bodies. As outlined by Professor Ireneusz Zbiciński, who coordinates the project at TUL, excessive eutrophication can lead to adverse changes in the ecosystem, which can in turn lead to the destruction of life at the bottom of reservoirs.

During the seminar the technical documentation of the planned investment, which has been funded by the WATERPRAXIS project, has been handed over to the authorities of Mniszków municipalityProf. Zbiciński states “Based on the completed consultation and expert evaluation of existing environmental programmes, we found that the scope of the investment should cover the construction of local sewage network in Zarzęcin and surrounding resorts. We have partnered with local authorities of Mniszków municipality, within which the planned investment will be located.”

This cooperation of TUL and the Mniszków municipality is a good example how cooperation can be achieved and investments can be realized.
